GOLFING BACK IN TIME

The History of Bowring Park & Golf Course

Built on the former grounds of Roby Hall Estate, Bowring Park got its name in 1907 when it was donated to the City of Liverpool by Alderman Sir William Bowring.

Just 6 years later, we opened as a 9-hole golf course and became England’s first municipal. Bowring Park was an immediate attraction, bringing in over 20,000 visitors in its first year.

This would all change shortly after as the course would be repurposed once World War I started.

Opened all the way back in 1913, we are England’s oldest municipal.

Bowring Park played an important role during both World Wars. Providing shelter during bombing while the grounds where used for food production.

It was only in 1956 that the golf course would re-open to the public.

18 hole expansion

Expansion of the M62 in the 1970’s bisected Bowring Park, and once again reduced the course to 9 holes.

It wasn’t until a decade later in the 1980’s that a parcel of land was purchased on the far side of the M62. We were once again able to extend to 18 holes, now with the well-known walk over the M62 to the 5th (as pictured).

In 1934, between closures, Bowring Park was extended to a full 18 hole course. It remained that way from 1956 when it reopened until the 1970’s.
